Subject: Re: school fundraiser
Author: Carla

We stopped doing in-school bookfairs years ago but have had success with in-store bookfairs. We rely on the school to do promotion, with fliers ent home, signage at school, etc., and emphasize that the rest of the family can shop as well, from our entire selection for all ages. It's up to the customer to identify their school affiliation, and we only count on hand stock or prepaid special orders. We simply keep the receipts separate, tally them and give copy to school, and give store credit (not a check or cash) for a negotiated amount preferably 15% and never more than 20%. The store credit option works great (thanks to Bobby Summer for that suggestion years ago). School's don't blink at all and it really helps with those margins. Schools must provide their reading lists early enough for us to do direct orders from publishers, and we suggest that teachers provide lists of what they'd like donated to their classes, and otherwise we sell from our regular stock. Very simple for us and the only way I can imagine doing bookfairs anymore.
