Join ABFFE

Over the past year, ABFFE has

  • Joined its colleagues in the book and library community in issuing a statement strongly supporting the Freedom to Read Protection Act (H.R. 1157), which amends the USA Patriot Act and restores the confidentiality of bookstore and library records

  • Filed a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit in an effort to force the Justice Department to reveal how many times it had used its power under the Patriot Act to secretly subpoena bookstore and library records

  • Filed a friend of the court brief in the first legal challenge to a restriction on the use of Harry Potter books in the public schools (the restriction was removed)

  • Convinced the University of California, San Diego, to drop plans to discipline two student groups, including a collective that runs a bookstore, for linking their university-supported Web sites to groups that the State Department lists as "foreign terrorist organizations"

  • Urged the New York Commissioner of Education to stop censoring the literary passages used in the state's Regents proficiency examinations

  • Joined a brief opposing the issuance of an injunction blocking the sale of The Federal Mafia, a book by an anti-tax protestor.

Help us defend First Amendment rights.
