The Book Wizard

The Book Wizard, 2822 Riverwood Lane NW, Rochester, MN 55901-2369; (507) 280-0608; e-mail: [email protected]; Web site: http://www.thebookwizard.com/; Carl Augustin.

Features: The first and only inventory system for bookstores that runs on the Apple Macintosh is now available for Windows 95/98/2000/XPNT. Based on the powerful relational database, 4D ™, the program contains all the standard features: ordering, receiving, returns, special orders, POS, bar code labels, bar code scanning, standard and custom reports, book club, off-site sales, used books, mail order, and electronic ordering. Complete sales history for each book by week, month or year, including date last sold and date last received, for four years. Customer file keeps complete customer purchase history and prints labels for mailing list. Import data from RGIS, ROSI and STEPS diskettes, at no extra charge. Inventory is tracked on a FIFO basis for true inventory valuation. The Macintosh and Windows 95/98/2000/XP/NT operating system allows several programs to run at the same time. The Book Wizard, BIP CD-ROM, a desktop publishing program and a spreadsheet can all be running at the same time and the operator can switch back and forth with one click of the mouse. Graphs can be created showing the relationship between on-hand inventory valuation and sales, for each section of the store. This feature will identify sections that are performing well and the ones that are doing poorly. This information will help the owner increase inventory turns. The Book Wizard was designed to be an effective management tool. As a lower cost alternative, Book Wizard Lite™ was introduced for booksellers that don't need all the above features. Book Wizard Lite comes with point-of-sale, book club, mailing labels, customer, merchandise and suppliers files. Booksellers can add more modules and features, as needs develop and budget allows. Book Wizard Lite is a true 32 bit program, and has never been available in MS-DOS.

Target Environment: Single computer for smaller stores to 15 computers for larger stores 3,000 to 100,000+ titles.

Development History: Co-developer Carl Augustin owned a children's bookstore for over five years. Not wanting to part with his user friendly Macintosh, he collaborated with a programmer to develop The Book Wizard. Pleased with the results, they decided to market the program to other booksellers. Committed to the user-friendly graphical interface, The Book Wizard is now available for Windows 95/98/2000/XP/NT. Because many booksellers cannot afford or do not need a full-featured inventory control program, Book Wizard Lite was developed as a lower cost alternative.

Standard Configuration/Cost: Most any Macintosh, with at least 16MB - 64MB of RAM will work, with a PowerMac, G3 and new iMac being the ideal platform. A Pentium processor, Windows 95/98/2000/XP or NT, and 64MB of RAM required for the PC version. Prices range from $695 for Book Wizard Lite to $2,800 for the multi-user version of The Book Wizard. Price of software has not increased since its introduction. Free Macintosh or Windows demo software can be downloaded at http://www.thebookwizard.com.

Training: No need for on-site training and installation. Bookseller installs software and loads inventory. Training is done via a detailed manual, demo database, phone and e-mail technical support.

Support: Three months of free telephone support and upgrades; thereafter, $195.00 to $295.00 per year for telephone support and all upgrades. Technical support can be reached days, evenings, and weekends at no extra cost.

Forthcoming Features: Searchable customer purchase history. You will be able to find all customers that bought a book by a certain author or from a certain section of the store. For example, if a new Tom Clancy book is being released, you can lookup all customers that have bought a Clancy book in the past, print mailing labels and send out a postcard announcing the new book and offer to reserve a copy for the customer. If a poet is visiting the store, all customers that have bought a book from the poetry section can be reached. Customers that have not made a purchase in a long time as well as the best customers can also be identified. This will greatly enhance relationship marketing. We also plan to offer electronic ordering via Pubnet 2000 and e-mail directly from The Book Wizard.
