Advance Access Program/Advertising and Promotional Opportunities

How can I best get word out to independent booksellers and the public about my book?

  • To get a reading copy into booksellers' hands, look into the Advanced Access Program. (See information below from Peter Reynolds, Book Sense Special Projects Manager).
  • Enter the title in the BookSense.com title database by sending an e-mail with ISBN, Title, Author, Publisher Pub. date, Binding type, Price, and BISAC code or genre to [email protected].
  • Become a BookSense.com affiliate! Click on the Affiliate Button at BookSense.com
  • Rent the ABA mailing list and contact stores directly; e-mail [email protected] for costs.
  • Place a text ad in the ABA trade e-mail vehicle, Bookselling This Week. E-mail [email protected] for details.
  • Go to the ABA trade website, www.bookweb.org for resources and other information

The Book Sense Advance Access Program

Several times each month, we email over 1,000 independent booksellers with news of galleys, reading copies or finished books that you are offering for review. After receiving a free review copy from you, stores will read and decide whether to carry the title, and hopefully even nominate it for the Book Sense List. We make no promises, but the Advance Access program has proven to be a very effective way to get the word out about your titles. Stores will email you directly, and generally, you can expect requests from 25-50 booksellers. The stores do know that it is "first come/first served," but the more booksellers you can provide copies for, the better, of course.

All book descriptions must be sent to Peter Reynolds via email at [email protected], with title, author, publisher, ISBN, subject category, publication date, the number of free copies you have to offer, a maximum two-sentence description, and an email address to which the booksellers can write to directly request a copy. Please put this all in one paragraph, without actually putting in the words ‘Title, Author, etc.’, and put the email address to which booksellers are to respond at the end of the paragraph without a period. This is all so the information can be easily cut and pasted into the larger email to the stores. An example follows:

***************************

TITLE XYZ by David Smith, (Publisher, ISBN: 0-000-00000-0, $23.95, hardcover, September 2004, Mystery/Thriller). A two-sentence description of the title here. No more than 50 words, please. XX number of galleys available.
mailto:[email protected]

***************************

(Please do NOT include website information or attach press releases or jacket jpegs.) Due to high volume, it may take us 2-3 weeks from your first writing until word of your book offer gets emailed to the stores.

IMPORTANT: Due to the volume of offers and the staff time it takes to process and aggregate them, we must charge $100 per title for access to this program. Please send your check for $100 per title offered, payable to American Booksellers Association, to ABA, 200 White Plains Rd., Tarrytown, NY 10591 ATTN: Sadie Evans. If you prefer to pay by credit card, please call Sadie at 914-591-2665 x 6622 or email her at [email protected] to make those arrangements. Thank you!

(PLEASE NOTE: This fee is waived if you are a Publisher Partner directly or if you are one of the hundreds of small presses working with PGW, NBN, Trafalgar, IPG, Consortium, CDS, or ADG. If you are not distributed by any of the above but are a PMA or SPAN client, you can participate at the rate of $50 per title.)

When you hear from the booksellers requesting a copy of your book, we highly recommend that you include a short note with each book sent out. Just a "thank you" and your name is fine, plus a reminder to ‘email or write Dan Cullen ([email protected]) if you like it.’ You may include press material, but this is not necessary. You can also save the email addresses of the booksellers you sent books to, and after a month’s time, follow-up with a short query as to whether the book has been read.
