THE AMERICAN BOOKSELLERS ASSOCIATION AND
<INSERT BOOKSTORE NAME HERE>
RELEASE NEW REGIONAL WEEKLY BESTSELLER LIST:
~ <INSERT TITLE OF LIST HERE>
~
DATE (CITY, STATE) -- <INSERT
BOOKSTORE NAME, CITY, STATE HERE>, a local independent bookseller
with Book Sense, and the American Booksellers Association have announced
the release of a new regional weekly bestseller list -- the <INSERT
TITLE OF LIST HERE>. It is the largest independent bookstore
bestseller list, both in number of categories reported and number of stores
participating.
The data for the list is gathered from hundreds of independent booksellers
with Book Sense all over the <REGION NAME
GOES HERE> and represents a weighted balance of both store
size and geographic distribution. Sales figures are compiled at the end
of business on Saturday and are e-mailed to the reporting stores, publishers,
and the media on the following Tuesday. The list is posted at <INSERT
REGIONAL WEB ADDRESS HERE> by Thursday for the media. Consumers
will see an 8.5" x 11" list at their local independent bookstore
with Book Sense the subsequent Monday.
The <INSERT TITLE OF LIST HERE>
regularly features the top fifteen books in Trade Paperback Fiction and
Nonfiction, Hardcover Fiction and Nonfiction, Children's (Illustrated
and Fiction combined), as well as the top ten books in the Mass Market
category.
"Independent booksellers are thrilled that a region-specific bestseller
list that reflects a more diverse and broader cross-section of the book
buying population is now available," said Mark Nichols, director
of Book Sense marketing. "It is interesting to note that week after
week independents are posting sales of many new books much earlier than
the traditional lists -- they're way ahead of the curve. Many of the Book
Sense bestsellers have moved on to the other lists, validating their important
place in America's publishing world," Nichols continued.
Independent booksellers traditionally "handsell" books by
recommending "unproven" but critically acclaimed authors to
their readers, and in many cases help nurture authors to commercial success.
Nichols explained, "Many of the Book Sense bestsellers are unique
to independents, with the independent booksellers the only ones supporting
and selling in quantity a range of first novels, award winners, books
for reading groups, and influential current events books. This new list
is definitely both more interesting and representative of what readers
are actually reading. It contains both the household names and exciting
new discoveries."
In addition to the national and regional bestseller lists, ABA periodically
-- or upon request -- will run "Category Bestseller Lists" for
subject categories including African-American, poetry, mystery, travel
literature, and gay and lesbian interest, etc.
The <INSERT TITLE OF LIST HERE>
is valuable to independent booksellers as well as consumers and publishers.
The list reflects the characteristics that make independent booksellers
unique -- Knowledge, Passion, Character, Community, and Personality. The
list provides expansive choices for consumers and a greater opportunity
for independent publishers to gain attention to their titles.
The <INSERT TITLE OF LIST HERE>
is one of several recent initiatives in the Book Sense campaign. The Book
Sense integrated national branding and marketing campaign seeks to build
a national identity for independent bookstores while celebrating the unique
nature of each store, to create awareness of independent booksellers across
the country and to underscore their collective strength to consumers.
For more information about running one of the lists in your newspaper,
magazine, online, or other media outlet, contact Meg Smith, American Booksellers
Association, (800) 637-0037, ext. 6641 or [email protected].
